WOW…there were a lot of people out tonight. I didn’t stay to the end as the second stop was a bit long due to the crowd.
Bike Party is getting bigger & better. Thanks to all the volunteers.

Yeah, I never thought I’d say it…but it was almost too big of a crowd. That was the most congested as I’ve seen it. HOWEVER! there was seemingly much fewer ruffians doing stupid things, woohoo!
And there must have been a miscue at the first regroup, as I can’t believe the whole group was going through a four foot wide gate to enter the college parking lot!!

Amazing crowd! And I agree w/ Chad’s observation that we seemed a little better behaved than usual (maybe because of the heavy police presence at the start?)
I’m still uploading stills but you can view my Homestead Road photoshoot video here; I hope you enjoy!

First time at the SJ Bike Party. Great crowd, great vibe, great ride.
People, please, please, slooooow down and ride straight! Don’t zig-zag all over the street.
There was a serious accident tonight because some were riding way to fast.
Have fun, but always be considerate of fellow bikers AND the cars trying to get through.

I just bought a bicycle a week ago, heard about this and came out. I was thinking a couple hundred at best….but to my surprise there had to be at least 2k….. what a great group….. see you next month!

First and foremost, I would like to give a rousing, SJ Bike Party thank yous, to all of the police & fire departments who handled our HUGE Bike Party crowd with AWESOME: skill, professionalism and patience.
We witnessed “textbook work” last night, and we all came away “much impressed!

I will be joining bike party next month as family and I enjoyed all the creative bikes that we saw last night. I live near homestead in cupertino and my little kids were so excited. Cupertino very boring so this party is great! I’m in my 50′s, but I ride like wild man! However, I saw some kids light firecrackers that were not so good. I show you next month real fireworks import from Japan!

Takashi, it will be great to have you and the family at the next Bike Party. Bike Party can be a fun shared family experience.
The only problem is that fireworks are not allowed at Bike Party. Too many things could go wrong that could potentially hurt one or more innocent bicyclists. The law of unintended consequences could turn your family-fun, Bike Party experience into a horror show. That person with fireworks last night broke a SJBP rule, plus; he risked being arrested by the police. You don’t need that kind of trouble.
So please bring the family, but lose the fireworks; that way you are almost guaranteed a safe, legal and fun night out.

I believe he’s saying some other folks were, and gently and cleverly requesting they knock it off before he busts His out. And I agree, I had a great time but don’t do so well with things that go ‘bang’ and ‘pop’, and doubt they combine well with traffic safety. Please, folks, no fireworks.

It was my first time joining SJbikeparty. I just wanted to say that I had an awesome time! It was such a rush to be be part of this large group ride. I was out getting a bite to eat one night and noticed the huge group of bikes riding by. I came home and jumped on the internet to find what it was all about. I was glad I found the group. My bike had been collecting dust for a few years. This motivated me to get my bike down and join in. What better place can you be then with a great bunch of people riding your bike and getting a free concert with all the varieties of music carts riding by bumping the tunes…
. I’ll definitely be joining the next ride.

Hello Ian,
Do you know yet approx. how many participated? Is there a place on the website that indicates this? Thx.

Great ride. I stayed at the front so I got to ride the Mary Ave. bridge which was pretty cool. Until last night, I’ve only driven underneath it.
I heard there was over 4000 riders?
Sunnyvale DPS (aka PD) motor offiers, THANKS for your patience. Following the ride outside your city limits????
To the “a-hole” who ran the red light at DeAnza and Mariani Ave. with both of his middle fingers in the air, well, enough said.
Have fun, be careful…ian

Thanks Ian. It seemed bigger than the Legs Ride. No matter how you count it … it was WELL attended and for the most part riders behaved. I agree that going over the bridge was awesome. “Cool” as you stated. Thanks to the birds and police who managed to keep us going in the right direction and following the rules. LOVE BIKE PARTY! Each time I get more into it. See you next month! BTW, who selects the themes?
Ian
July 21, 2012
The themes are selected by the folks who show up at the monthly volunteer meetings.
i’m not sure what the count was once i find out i’ll let you know.
The offical count we had at the Mary bridge was 4165 riders…. which is Awesome!

Thanks for the follow-up Ian. I look forward to the next “theme” ride.

i TOTALLY love fireworks, and have spent a ridiculous amount of money on them back when I was younger.
Keep in mind we’re on the “chopping block” by a great many people (fairly understandably) especially those within local governments. There’s a few of “us” who ride in the left lane and block traffic, continue riding through red lights blocking more traffic, don’t allow cars to merge/turn/drive, ride on sidewalks, wake up sleepers with loud music, leave trash all over neighborhoods, and yes…light off fireworks. Fireworks brings huge negative attention to us for many blocks away from our group. Please PLEASE leave them at home.

Great points Chad! I hope Mr. Takashi is just a jester who is tweaking our noses by his outrageous statements.
But if by chance he is serious about his fireworks, I would advise that he stop in his tracks or, he risks terrorizing, and severely harming his children, with permanent phantasmagoric images of their DAD being led away in handcuffs by the police from Bike Party.
Please bear in mind Mr. Takash that: “He who rides tiger must be wary lest he ends up inside tiger…”

This was my first time out and it was a great time. Thank to SJBP for putting on such a fun event. The route was great and I am still in awe at the sheer number of people who came out for this event.
I had my GoPro mounted to my bike and set it to take a photo every 2 seconds. In the end, the camera filled up with over 4000 images (8GB card) and I put them into a video. It cuts out shortly after the Mountain View stop and is a bit shaky but I thought it turned out pretty cool. I hope you guys like it.

My friend and I have now attended four times and we felt this was very likely the best one yet. No motorized bicycles (Yea!) and asshattery was held to a minimum. ‘Only saw a few obviously drunk individuals and the crowd was in a festive party mood. We’re lookin’ forward to the next party!
Oh, and does anyone have updates/info on the “serious accident”.
And finally, let’s leave the fireworks at home. I’ve seen what can happen when fireworks go wrong. It’s not pretty.

Really, great experience, best social ride ever! I had my three teenage sons with me (all of us on recumbents) and the crowd couldn’t have been friendlier, police and traffic were supportive, and a general “nice” atmosphere all the way around. We even thought it was a nice, slow pace. AND it was remarkably well organized – whenever it seemed that there might be an issue, a volunteer appeared to bark out guidance for all. Even the Mary St. Bridge walkover turned out to be social and cool. Thanks so much for this – we’ll definitely be back!
