Christmas in the Dark was a huge success last night, despite three days of doom-n-gloom weather predictions. About 150 started out from under 280 on First Street, and there was about that number at the third regroup. The light drizzle we did get might’ve made our bikes a bit wet, but it didn’t dampen our spirits as we rolled through Willow Glen’s wonderfully lit up neighborhoods. It would’ve been nice for those in the front of the group to have slowed down a little to keep the small group together better, as the traffic lights in downtown spread us out a bit. And many stopping to listen to a few tunes played by the brass band on Glen Eyrie spread us out a bit more too. But who could resist?!?
The second section of the ride included the Dry Creek neighborhood and ended at the Pruneyard garage, where we chilled on the top. Although we sited all the regroups under roofs, mostly it wasn’t necessary. The third leg of the ride took us through Campbell (sparsely inhabited) and Santana Row, with the final regroup on the SCV Medical Center’s enormous parking garage. From the roof, it was neat seeing bike partiers ride over 280 on MacArthur on their way to the regroup all lit up like rolling Christmas trees. We should’ve taken the bike bridge, as only the sleigh would’ve had to detour around it. Stevens Creek over 17 is a very awkward route for cyclists, especially a big group in the rain.
Everyone seemed to have a great time though. With all the dire predictions of driving rain all day and night keeping most away, those who showed up were well prepared for a deluge. We must be a net “nice” group then, as Santa rewarded us with the kind of gentle misting reminiscent of balmy late fall weather typical in the midwest. I bailed at Shasta and Park and was home and dry by 11:30, including a few minutes to wipe down my trusty ’69 Raleigh Superbe 3-speed classic cruiser. As I rolled into the garage, the old phrase “Rode hard and put up wet” entered my mind, and I just couldn’t see treating my old steel steed that way.
So thanks to everybody who rode to see some Christmas lights with me last night. Merry Christmas to all, and to all “ride on”!!!!!

Ugh, I caught an awful cold, and nearly missed all of tonight’s party…
Apologies, hope you don’t mind I actually DROVE A CAR with the group for a few miles. I have actually tried to imagine what doing this would be like… I had the windows down, and thought I could sort of blend in and it would be cool; but it really doesn’t work very well. The going slow part was fine, but it feels like being this huge, obstructive boulder that was squeezing too much space away from everyone else.
It’s amazing how fast everyone was riding, I kept falling off the back!
Anyway, thanks everyone for politely putting up with my intrusive experiment. I’ll return next month… with bike.

It was a wonderful ride. The weather didn’t slow down the riders at all – real Bike Partier’s!

I wish I went, but my wife and kids begged me not to go. They thought I would become road pizza , due to some drunk leaving a work xmas party. I did go on novembers ride, tons of rain and alot of fun.

This one felt like a pre-ride maybe like the good old days for you OG’s bike partiers . It was kinda crazy with the palm trees started dropping branches like bombs when the wind pick up a bit. When we got near my home I cut my ride short fearing the rain. Glad to hear that you guys made it throught with out much of it.

Fantastic route, great weather, awesome vibe. Loved riding by the live orchestra in the garage playing Christmas tunes. Yes, the wind-whipped palm trees were indeed magical.

Great fun. The rain was but a mere inconvenience at times, in stark contrast to the cold wet deluge we endured last month. So many high notes, the giant reindeer on Glen Eyrie, the awesome bike sleigh, the garage X-mas concert.
It seemed everyone was in such high spirits and joyful to be celebrating in our special BP way. Nice vibe with the smaller more intimate crowd. Lots of smaller sound systems to keep the crowd entertained.
Justin (Autonomous) & I met some great new BP’ers (guys & gals) at the end of the ride under the bridge and ended up partying there with them till 1am.

Oh, I forgot, Dustin was also there till the end also. Didn’t mean to omit your presence!
Now for the techincal drama!
Some girl scrubbed right at the very beginning and landed on her face.
I almost took out Katie on 2nd st when my tire went into this weird trench. How we didn’t go down is a mystery!
Ed S got 4 flats that night and finally said “enough’s enough”.
My left side crank fell off, but luckily Townie Bill was there with a great tool kit.
Kevin’s friends crank came off also. I think there were a couple of other flats too. What a crazy night!

The rain was no problem for me at all — everyone did ride a little slower in it, which was wise. I was cozy enough in my full rain gear, helmet cover, and neoprene dive socks.
There were a few people who I was concerned whether they were staying warm and/or dry enough. I checked-up on a few of them occasionally. It’s hard for people to detect early-stage hypothermia in themselves, but that’s when some serious accidents can happen.
I was especially surprised that there were still a few riders who didn’t have at least some kind of light. I wish we could do something about that.

Evidence that Bike Party builds community…
It turns out that the musicians who play in that Willow Glen garage brass band are also SJ Bike Party supporters, and some occasionally participate in SJBP rides themselves.
They have told me they totally appreciate and encourage the Bike Party to visit their annual holiday concert, look forward to seeing us next year, and would like to express their thanks to all of you.
They would like to make just one humble request:
Please help support music instruction in public schools.

Fabulous! I was at the front of the ride when we came up on them. They could hear us coming and I heard calls of “Bike Party!” from them before we even came into view. I knew then that they were supporters, and it was a fabulous welcome! Great performance. I loved that we were small enough this month to park out in front of the house to enjoy the music for a few minutes. That is going down as one of my favorite Bike Party moments. Thanks for the entertainment!

I saw some of riders on the streets…. I am guessing stragglers, but the ones we saw had great lights (the light festooned fiberglass pole was great) so the got a shaka and loud “bike party” from my son.

If someone has a picture of the light festooned fiberglass pole that Billly Cool had, could you please put it on the SJBP flickr site (or post the URL of wherever it is). I want to show some of my cycling friends to the north how cool it looked.
Thanks!
