SJBP’S 3RD ANNIVERSARY RIDE

Coming to a Neighborhood Near You!
THE LIVING DEAD…Coming to a Neighborhood Near You!
this will be an OLD SCHOOL Bike Party (with a twist) for our 3rd anniversary ride.
- New (and newish) Volunteer Training at 7:00pm
- Volunteer Circles for BIRDs, volunteers at 7:30pm
We have secured many new volunteers. Thank you! But we need at least 50 more volunteers the night of Bike Party as well. If you have no time to volunteer the rest of the month, that’s ok. But volunteer once every few rides the night of Bike Party. Start now!
Volunteers Are Needed to help with:
- Keeping middle of the sjbp start “car free” allows us to have a better time, meet others… park on the edges of the parking lots or next door
- Ravens – Trash detail at start & regroups to leave the parking lots clean (can a group help with transporting ~12 foldable “cans” to each regroup?)
- Key intersections throughout the ride
- Helping BIRDs at regroups – direct riders deep into the regroups
- Vocally backing up the BIRDs and other volunteers
- Helping outreach NOW to bike stores & others that might help with stranded and broken down cyclists
- Help lead the riders in the “last stretch” home
Get your costumes and face paint now!
- Contest: Best costumes, pics, videos
- Food at 7pm
- Wheels on the Street at 8pm
Details below.
Stop Trashing San Jose!
This is our key focus this month. We need ALL of you to help. Please bring a small plastic bag from the grocery store and take care of your own trash. If you see volunteers collecting trash, step up and help them out! Please lets leave our Starting Points, our roads and our regroups clean and litter free!
How We Ride:
If you follow these eight rules, Bike Party will be safe and a positive place for riders, drivers, pedestrians, and the community
1. Stay in the right lane when possible. NEVER ride the sidewalk. NEVER ride against oncoming traffic.
2. Pick up your trash, leave nothing behind.
3. Stop at red lights.
4. Ride straight, ride predictability.
5. Roll past conflict.
6. Leave no one behind.
7. Ride sober! It’s illegal and dangerous to ride a bicycle inebriated.
8. Communicate to fellow riders! (We need your help to remind those who aren’t following the rules!)
Game Plan:
- Dress like a zombie, vampire, ghost or ghoul – anything UNDEAD!
- Have fun! Be ghoulish! Give candy to others! Eat some brains!
- Bring a small trash bag, help others who may be collecting trash
- Bring cash for vendors
- Help out BIRDs and other riders in need
Ride Details:
There are 4 starting points, all coming together to form 1 main ride (like Voltron) and then after the 3rd regroup, everyone returns to their original starting point in 4 ongoing return rides!
- get to a start point in a neighborhood near you … NSJ, ESJ, SSJ, WSJ, chill with fellow riders, maybe some BIRDs
- leave the core area CAR FREE at ALL the starting points – park in adjoining lots or at the far perimeter! the joy of bike party is riding your bike around meeting others w/o cars! (we need all of you to help with this, not just volunteers having to remind everyone)
- volunteer training starts at 7pm at each start
- if a BIRD has an extra map, cool … or follow them to Regroup #1, about 6-8 miles
- at Regroup #2, follow directions from the BIRDs and go to the very back of the regroup… please keep a center aisle free! please do NOT go to a different area unless a group of BIRDs asks you to (thank you!)
- tons of maps will be printed … some BIRDs will be handing them out at R#2… but even the BIRDs themselves don’t have these maps yet!
- these maps have the main route and also include the way home after the 3rd regroup
- enjoy the ride to two more epic regroups, a special “tricks” event planned for regroup #3
- at the 3rd regroup there will be signs where you can meet other riders that want to go back to the same starting point
- every once in a while a group will depart – those that want to go back can will look for others to join em, BIRDs and non-BIRDs alike
FYI – all the roads are mellow, no killer hills, total distance for the night = 27-33 mi including the ride back to the start.
Your Starting Points:
Like we said earlier, this will be an OLD SCHOOL Bike Party (with a twist) for our 3rd anniversary ride. No maps ahead of time, just like old times.
The twist? That’s easy: four (4) starts instead of one. Look out for maps at the 1st regroup, there will be very few at the 4 starting points.
Southside – Chynoweth VTA Light Rail Lot, 32mi
Riders group up at on side of station towards Chynoweth Ave @ Pearl Ave
Drivers please only park on the east lots at Hwy 85/87/Santa Teresa
Please cross the tracks carefully thru the gates
Northside/Santa Clara - Behind Frozo’s across from SCU, 27mi
~900 Lafayette, Santa Clara, intersection of Lafayette and Benton
Eastside – Old Mervyn’s Lot, 29mi
Intersection of Capitol & McKee , just north of Dollar Tree
Westside – behind Gold’s Gym, 33mi
700 W. Hamilton Ave, Campbell, 95008
intersection of Hamilton & San Tomas Expressway
Summary:
There are 4 start routes to the first regroup. All 4 routes meet up at the first regroup … and become one giant ride. After we chill for awhile there we then go to the 2nd and 3rd re-groups… arriving at the 3rd regroup at around 11:30 to midnight where we’ll have a “tricks” show. Then you will look for signs in the quad area… these will show the 4 Start locations…. meet there when you want to leave… small groups will collect and you’ll all have a “mini Bike Party” ride back to YOUR starting point. How cool is that?
NOTE: We will be making modifications to this to attempt to make this more clear. But trust us, this will be one epic ride… and with all our new volunteers and so many of you in costume, it’ll be memorable.
If you’d like to volunteer, please be there by 7pm.

Hey riders, I did my first ride last month and I had the time of my life. It was so worth the 4hr. drive and a days pay. I’m planning on doing it again next month. Though it was crazy trying to find the starting point. I met a friendly bird named Tiffany at the “In and Out” bathroom, and was hoping she could help me out?????

You are in for a very pleasant surprise for our 3rd anniversary ride.
Just please be sure to back up the BIRDs again this month, okay?

Check out the second sentence under the second question in the FAQ.
http://www.sjbikeparty.org/faq
Where is the ride? How do I get there?
The rides starting point is rotated every month (since August 2009). Check the website 24 hours before the ride to get the exact address and route.

This is gonna be a blast…. has it really been 3 years?
Rider 44
October 12, 2010
Anniversary milestones are fun times to find out things like…..
Who has been here since the very beginning?
Who started riding during the first year? first six months?
Who has been on the most main rides? Anybody made it to all of them?
Who has been on 24 or more rides? 30 or more?
And if the people who can say ‘yes!’ to any of the above questions wanted to share some of their thoughts, memories, hopes…
Having something written down from the early years can be good.

I’ve been culturally deprived of the zombie lore in popular culture. So to remedy this on short order I watched the original Night of the Living Dead. At least in this movie, the zombies don’t seem to have any preference for the part of their victims they consume.

Rider44 –
We had tons of fun last time. I’ll be more than happy to help out the birds and volunteer along with my group. Sounds like something we normally do to help out. It’s all a team effort.
Thanks for the up and coming years of fun.

Hi SafeRider,

October 14, 2010
I have to ask why don’t you know any birds? have you tried coming to any of our meetings or testrides? we certanly had a lot of them this month to give everyone a chance to get plugged in.
Bike party lives or dies based on the number of birds we can get to help out with a huge number of small tasks. we aren’t limiting the route to be jerks or elitist a-holes
we are trying to get folks to step up and own bike party. we need you.
if you don’t know anyone yet. come to bike party on Friday and show up early at 7 to one of the starts. we will be doing a bird training and going over the plan for making the route successful.
if for some reason you can’t do that. bring a trash bag and make sure we leave each of our regroups cleaner than it was before. you will meet some fantastic folks who really care about bike party.
If you are unable to do either one of these suggestions you probably should ask a couple of questions starting with:
“what is bike party to me?”
“do i really care about bike party at all?”
“what am i doing to make sure bike party better?”
Heres hoping i see you on the ride..

A countdown clock up at the top of the page would be pretty cool.
The clock could start the week before the main ride and count down the seconds until the map is going to be released.
HH:MM:SS until the October map is released
Then when the map is released it could switch over to
HH:MM:SS until Bike Party
And if you wanted to, you could even have
HH:MM:SS until the next Test Ride

October 14, 2010
I can,
Check back here later this evening.

Also, the last two lines of the main post state:
More Info to follow this evening (thursday)!
“Everyone will get startpoint info this month.”
Why, the only two things you can be more sure of are death and taxes…
Death…… bwahahahaha…..

October 14, 2010
well … first you get yourself to a startpoint in a neighborhood near you … meet some BIRDs and someone might kindly give you one if they have extras … or you can follow them to the next regroup where all BIRDs have been instructed to hand out maps that will be mass printed … haha even the BIRDs themselves don’t have these maps yet!
And for all you folks that are wondering, ALL Startpoint Roundtrips will be between 27-33 miles.
The ride will “end” sortof … in DTSJ for those who aren’t riding back to their startpoints.
tanner
October 14, 2010
btw … for anyone around DTSJ, iMinusD, a local fixed gear boutique, will be offering a special %10 off on Bike Party supplies (lights, tubes, tires or anything else you may need) from 6:00-7:00 p.m. They are located located @ 112 Paseo de San Antonio. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. This place is the Fixed Gear Mecca of SJ, imho.

October 14, 2010
Welcome to Bike Party! Hopefully you will share your results on the BP Flickr page. If you have a beater camera, You may want to bring that until you get an idea of what BP is like. But if you really want to bring the D300, I’ve seen lots of people take some really good pix from the side of the road as bikes pass them by. Also, pix at the regroups are another safe option. On the bright side, statistically you have a very low probability of falling. Another thing I’ve heard people mention is to stay in a group around a music trailer, kind of like swimming with a school of fish. More consistent with less unexpected, sudden movements. Have fun, this is gonna be a great anniversary ride!
Jaytron
October 15, 2010
I don’t have a beater camera (sold it) I really need to pick up another though. I’m just worried I’ll forget I’m clipped in and fall over with my camera. Since this is my first time, I’ll probably leave the camera at home and just have a good time! Hopefully I can talk some friends into going!
Rider 44
October 15, 2010
I usually ride with clipless pedals but lately I’ve specifically been doing bike party with regular old platform pedals and that’s been working much better. There really is a lot of super slow stuff where having clips on the shoes is a pain.
If you have a padded camera case and could throw that in a backpack or whatever you are bringing, you might want to consider that. There are oodles of good photo opps and you may find a way to make it work.

October 14, 2010
Map would be appreciated ahead of time. This enables a safe starting point and end point for my family. We always review the regroups and discuss where we should start and end. As suggested by prior birds. We pick the less busy routes of the ride. Map at the starting point? “No good my friend….”
[mod/rs: ride info posted - start locations given, not maps. pic a start in your neighborhood, etc. there will be many bail out points via VTA light rail for you to choose from]
scott
October 14, 2010
@cindy – all the routes should be in great shape, i’ll be helping lead the SSJ ride, so i’m biased. LOL. it would be cool to have you there. this route may have the lowest attendance since we’ve not had a lot of rides in SSJ.
extra bonus to the SSJ ride is that it’s right by the light rail line so you can bail at several places on the ride and get back via light rail.
but we’ll definitely need people who drive to park on the east side, the hwy 85/87/santa teresa side.
also hoping we don’t overwhelm our friends at VTA… message for all would be, please RIDE if you can to your LOCAL start if you can… and leave early if you must take light rail to a start in SSJ or ESJ.
Rider 44
October 15, 2010
Another option people could consider. Park on residential streets near the start location. I always figure parking in front of someone’s house in a decent looking neighborhood is way safer than parking at a VTA lot. Perhaps I’m wrong.
For example, look at the google map for the Ohlone start. Switch it from satellite to map view, slide up a little bit, see all those residential neighborhoods off of Pearl. Kozera Dr, Severance Dr, New Trier Ave… Pick one of those and then zoom in to google street view. Looks like a pretty safe neighborhood to park a car in.
The other benefit of that is, parking on a city street you don’t need to worry about the owner of a parking lot towing you. That’s not a problem with VTA, but some of the places we start at it could be.
After you park it is a super easy 3-4 block ride to the start location.
scott
October 15, 2010
david,
“just say no!”
put yourself in those neighbors houses for a moment…
1) do you want to have your parking taken away?
2) what if guests come over?
3) did those a-holes dump food waste, cans and bottles in my yard?
4) were they wretching or pissing in my yard? wth?
5) can’t they park correctly?
all of these are issues that have happened. repeatedly at previous bike parties. yes i hope this is not the rule, but why do that?!? why encourage this? i respectfully disagree 100% with you on this one david…. we need to maintain a “lighter footprint” in the neighborhoods. (riding thru em is bad enough in some of their minds)
VTA lot
1) access off of 2 freeways and santa teresa blvd
2) huge lot
3) everyone’s going back there, so should be safer than being amongst very few
4) is closest to light rail, so if you’re a newbie and dog tired, and you hopped on light rail (good call) you won’t have to ride another (ugh) 3-4 blocks
5) quick access back home on hwy 85/87/santa teresa
why VTA lot may not be great
1) have to cross the tracks, oh well
2) stuff might get stolen, perhaps
3) you hate things being so easy and uncomplicated

October 14, 2010
@Cindy, I know what you mean. Last two main PB rides I’ve had family with me and finding bail points was important. This month I too will be riding with my family. My daughter (8) and I are both birds and even we don’t have the maps this time. Fortunately we did several test rides so we know basically what to expect. My whole family and I did test ride 1.5 and it was extremely family friendly. My daughter and I did test ride 2.0 and it was good too. Like Scott said, SSJ start is where it’s at. We’ll take care of you there.
In preparation for future rides with your family, I’d encourage you to sign up with a mingle account and start getting to know people here. After doing test ride 1.5 and seeing the HUGE response of people wanting that, I committed to making sure we have more family friendly test rides each month. You can ask Scott, I’m not going to let him off the hook on that one.
See you in 2o hours!

If the SSJ start is where to be, I think I’ll be starting there as a newbie to this. See you there! Also, I’m not 100% sure I can do 30mi yet…. So being near the LR might be beneficial
[mod/rs: anyone going to SSJ, make sure you park on the eastern parking lots, with
easy access via hwy 85 and 87 and santa teresa blvd. (you'll be under the freeway overchanges) please do NOT park on the western side of the light rail (toward the apartments) cuz both of those smaller lots need to be reserved for bikes - so you can meet and mingle better in a car free zone. any volunteers to help keep this car free are welcome. thanks... you'll have to walk your bike thru the gates across the light rail, please watch for trains!]

“WHAT?!?! Am I not worth a trip up to SF to get a bike?!?!”
Dig deeper, there may be someplace else that rents tandems in your home area.
I don’t know where your home area is, I see two on CL in the south bay. You could buy one and then re-sell it. Even if you re-sold it at a loss of $70, you are still only out the same amount as if you’d rented the one from Blazing Saddles.

You guys shoulda made a starting point in downtown! All these four locations are FAR from downtown.

October 14, 2010
Hey Alex,
According to the ride details. This is their reason:
1. get to a start point in a neighborhood near you … NSJ, ESJ, SSJ, WSJ, chill with fellow riders, maybe some BIRDs
2. leave the core area CAR FREE at ALL the starting points – park in adjoining lots or at the far perimeter! the joy of bike party is riding your bike around meeting others w/o cars! (we need all of you to help with this, not just volunteers having to remind everyone)
=====================================
So technically, there’s 4 start points which converge to become A MASS. It’s not really adding more to our trip as well. Bike party from Main start to main finish is usually around 30 miles. So they included the separate start points to +/- a few from 30.

This is unrelated to this ride specificially, but I saw that there is/was a push to recycle and pickup trash more, so I’ll ask anyways. Would a rolling trash/recycle receptacle of sorts be asking for people to not pickup their trash/recycling?
I came up with the idea to make a rolling version of something like this:
http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=B0Xg22fe17E
But I get the feeling that when/if people miss they won’t stop and go pickup their trash/recycling. I also get the feeling that I’ll be seeing non-empty’s (or bottles/cans that still have fluids in them) come flying at me, and I’ll be covered in “fluids” by the end of the night. So I guess I can just make it a stop THING that people do, or if someone has any idea’s?
I won’t have it ready for this ride, but a rough version might be ready for future rides.

That looks like a great idea, you should do it. Notice the holes for the cans aren’t large enough that someone could do a toss from a distance, they need to be close. So you’re probably safe.
If you had a way to print a receipt and hold a raffle so the more CRV items a person deposits, the better their chances are at the raffle, you’d probably have people fighting over bottles and cans to win the raffle. And you’d have all that CRV value to turn in! Yes, go for it!

One thing i’m not clear about would be this:
New (and newish) Volunteer Training at 7:00pm
Volunteer Circles for BIRDs, volunteers at 7:30pm
We have secured many new volunteers. Thank you! But we need at least 50 more volunteers the night of Bike Party as well. If you have no time to volunteer the rest of the month, that’s ok. But volunteer once every few rides the night of Bike Party. Start now!
Volunteers Are Needed to help with:
Food at 7pm
Wheels on the Street at 8pm
======================================
The food part would mean we’re expecting food trucks @ all 4 starts? Or just the surrounding food joints around the 4 starts?
Also guessing 8pm is the when we leave from the 4 start points correct?
That is all.

I can’t get the game plan either.

@Sam, check the date on Chronicly Late’s post, she was talking about a test ride.
Actually you totally have the game plan. Read up above here. The game plan this month is to distribute the start locations and for our guests to get the routes later during the ride.

@sam, dinosaur –
you’ll have a great time tonight…
this is going back with an “old school” way of doing it, where cyclists rode over to dicks or the water tower and didn’t have a map ahead of time. it’s a way to bring back the past on sjbp’s 3rd anniversary ride.
the twist is starting in a neighborhood near you so most people don’t have to drive to the start (this was done for the 2 yr anniversary with 3 starts)
still confused? just look for one of the four starts closest to you… then ride or drive there.
if you drive, please keep the middle of the starting parking lots CAR free so 1k+ cyclists can ride around and have a great time before the start.
why so much info on this event page? cuz a ton of people aren’t listening and are not following the:
- how we ride mantra
- throw it in cans/bags, not on the ground
- keep the core starts car free
- backing up the BIRDs enough
- need for more volunteers

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the ‘old school’ history lesson. I wasn’t around back then, was wondering why they were doing it this way, now I know. Cool!
Hey Scott, one more thing,
If Denisaur doesn’t have a good time because of no map ahead of time, can he request a refund? I’m too new of a bird to know how to authorize refunds.
Thanks!

If someone riding with tools could meet up with me at the first regroup. Bike Party Piper needs a seat swapped out and we’re not sure what type of tools his seatpost needs. I’m already bringing the saddle and a bunch of other stuff and usually don’t bring the tools necessary to adjust saddles. Send me a PM and we’ll figure out how to get all of us together.
Thanks

I’ll have a basic multi-tool in my bag. I can meet up with you at the SSJ starting point. (I can’t find the PM button… lol)

Thanks. I carry a multitool also, but I don’t know if the hex bits go as large as some seat post bolts. Also, if he has an old style post that needs a crescent wrench, I normally don’t carry those.
I think I’ll just bite the bullet and carry my allen wrenches and crescent wrenches. What’s another few pounds.
Thanks!

Southside! I can’t wait, Music trailer is ready!
Awesome idea to split up the starts and converge all at the “second regroup”!

PLEASE don’t forget about TRASH!
Let us come together as one Bike Party community and say “adios” to TRASH and LITTER!
We need to do an awesome job with our TRASH this month.
I will be packing extra TRASH BAGS this month — like I always do.
All responsible cyclists need to pack and use TRASH bags!
TRASH is a serious “public relations issue” that if not solved quickly could cause a backlash.
Let’s overcome our TRASH problem this month and make it a non-issue forever!
We… we in the Bike Party Community have total control of this TRASH-issue and, we all need to do our part.
Much love and respect my bicycling brethren.
BikeParty forever!
