Volunteer Help Needed
Bike Party happens every month because of volunteers like you. We could use your help. Bring a trash bag to lessen the impact of our regroups. Meet with other volunteers before the ride to learn which intersections need help directing traffic. Learn How We Ride!
Vendors
In addition to vendors you see on Bike Party Rides, there are three places to get food at the start.
Frozo’s, Togo’s, & Hungry Hound are located here.
Frozo’s will donate to Bike Party 15% of Proceeds if you mention “bike party” tomorrow. Check out Frozo’s website
Word on the street:
Signs posted at the newly remodeled airport in San Jose have drawn criticism because it doesn’t allow bicycle traffic.
“The newly remodeled Airport Boulevard doesn’t allow bikes! Tell the county that bikes belong!”
SIGN THE Petition.
Look for people from the Silicon Valley Bike Coalition to be at the start with the petition for people who want to rep their awesome signatures in person.

Will Friday’s ride go through the airport? That would make a louder statement than a petition.
[moderator/tr: no, see ad when we'll announce specific details. each monthly ride takes time and test rides to polish the ride]

Just don’t understand why you can’t post the route sooner than 24-48 hrs ahead of time.
[moderator/tr: it's a best practice we had to institute for various reasons. come to a volunteer meeting to find out why and how you can help the ride]

Hi this will be my first bike party! Do you have any suggestions advice where to park for this ride?

July 15, 2010
I’m not sure, someone from SCU prob has to confirm.
They might have day passes at Santa Clara University campus. Should be able to park there.
testrides
July 15, 2010
@daisy, kevan – park on the homestead side. we’d like to keep the whole parking lot behind frozos, hungry hound and togo’s clear if possible.
we need to make sure we do NOT park near those businesses so their customers can get there.
having said that, please know that you have those plus mogo, quick dog and treatbot… .so you don’t need to eat at home first!
@david – we’ve found it works better that way. we’ve posted on facebook that it will be in santa clara days ago… and had more clues if you joined on the test rides.
hope y’all get your togas on!
and secure them so they
don’t get in your gears

Just wondering if SJ International has a place to lock bikes. And do people really ride their bikes to the airport before a plane ride? I know they don’t offer showers. Wish they did.
People drive badly at the airport. I wouldn’t count on them looking out for bicyclists while they try to read the incorrect terminal signs.

The Santa Clara Caltrain Station is close for parking. Right next to it to the South is lots of opportunity to park.

Diety Ride — Lets Celebrate the life of former SCU President Fr. Loc (Locatelli) — he has joined the other deities in Heaven. Far too early ;-(
An amazing man with an amazing transformation in his 20 years as President of SCU.
Please be flexible with the parking situation and anyone that may be going to and from the Memorial Mass at SCU that starts at 7:30pm!
The Mission Gardens and main Chapel (one of the original Missions of California) are across the street from out start. They expect 1500++ in attendance.

Pancreatic Cancer is the same disease that got Randy Pausch, of The Last Lecture, a moving lecture from a Carnegie Mellon Univ professor.

Yes, there is bike parking in the garage, on the terminal side. The maps on sjc.org show the bike rack locations under Maps & Directions -> (Terminal A/B) -> rollover the Customer Services icon.
And yes, people do bike to the airport – I’m one of them. And I’ve seen another bicycle parked at both my office and the airport, so I can’t be the only one.
It wouldn’t be *quite* so bad if the stupid path alongside the road were paved, or at least on a rideable type of gravel, rather than the crummy gravel that it is.
[moderator/tr: SJC expansion for this phase was on time/under budget. unclear if any $$ is budgeted & committed in next phase to pave the rest of the trail alongside SJC]

I second the sentiments of testrides. Fr. Paul Locatelli did many great things during his years at the helm of SCU. When I saw that the funeral mass is a couple of hundred yards from the starting point and at the same time, I thought this was about the worst possible starting point for tonight. With the parking lot being used simultaneously for funeral parking and bike party revelry the potential for conflict is serious. Let’s be vigilant about keeping interactions respectful!
testrides
July 16, 2010
@Ed – it’s normally a mellow place where nothing is happening. go figure… weirdly appropriate that these things happen. Fr Loc made SCU more of an epicenter for many things….
the mass starts at 7:30pm, so those attending the mass should be done parking as many bike party people are still driving or riding in.
as always we ask for volunteers. we need more than ever perhaps for the starting point. last time we had far too many people park at the center, near the food vendors… we need to keep this area clear so we can fit 2-3k bikes!
so please step up folks. it’s crazy to think we have to tell people not to park in the middle of where we need to assemble, but 50-100 people bike party’ers drive in and do exactly that every single ride!! it’s nuts, but some people just don’t think of the big picture!
(this is what went wrong at the world cup ride – no volunteers stepped up to keep 100+ cars out! so 1000+ riders could not get into the pre-assemble area nor get food from the vendors and the vendors couldn’t get to their pre-assigned parking spots themselves. let’s not make this same mistake twice!)
so we need volunteers to help to keep the main area free of cars – EXCEPT for the customers of Frozo’s, Hungry Hound, Togo’s, the laundrymat, etc, etc.
thanks!

@perlasum – i’ve heard that on apple laptops etc that you can do a screen capture, etc.
it is the MMR that has print issues, but MMR has other benefits. hope we can find a better solution… as some like TxT and some like visual maps better.

I have a few DVDs to hand out and I can shoot some more video. If I can get there tonight… (also have to prepare a potluck dish for our dance studio).

My emotions are in serious overflow.
The butterflies are going wild!
It’s our first official summer ride.
I can’t wait for the start of the top event in the South Bay this weekend.
Let’s all have a safe ride.
Observe all traffic laws.
Show much respect for property.
And “share the road” my bicycling brethren.
LET US ALL OWN THE RIDE!
The larger crowd requires a bigger commitment and focus.
Please everybody speak up, shout down, and keep your friends, neighbors and all bicyclist in line: to keep ours, yours, and everybody’s SAN JOSE BIKE PARTY going strong for long!
It is BIKE PARTY Time!!!!
BIKE PARTY forever…
Funeral Attendee
July 17, 2010
It is amazing that you all knew your party tonight was set to start right next to a major funeral and went ahead with it any way. To be sure, your air horns disrupted the service perfectly right at a solemn quite time. That was so cool. You really made huge strides for bicycle rights.
[moderator/tr: apologies to you or anyone else that felt this way. this was not the intent to disrupt the services, every intent was made to minimize noise and disruption. the air horn was from a truck, not from bikes]
