Pre-ride festivities start at 6pm this Friday, June 18th! See schedule below.
Every 4 years, teams and fans from far and wide all come together to share a common goal, the quest for the cup.
About every 4 Fridays, we like to think SJBP riders share the same kind of excitement about our own journey.
The competition is beginning to heat up in South Africa, and so is the weather out here in San Jose. Come out a join us for a beautiful summer night ride through the heart of East San Jose.
Theme:
So …. Wear a Jersey, Carry Your Teams Flag, Paint Your Game Face! San Jose is about to be infested with Hooligans on wheels.
Details:
This round we got a few tricks up our sleeve … so we are encouraging everyone to come out and enjoy the Pre-Ride Festival.
Worried about missing dinner? Don’t! There will be plenty of vendors selling food out their “ride thru” windows, so people are encouraged to come early.
We don’t usually do this, but we are giving out the start location REALLY EARLY … so y’all can BLOG ABOUT IT and get the buzz going like a South African Vuvuzela.

Hey, folks, I’ll have a Vuvuzela to replicate — in my own small way — a little of the “electric atmosphere” at the “futbol” venues in South Africa.
Break-out your Vuvuzelas amigos — it is the lasting symbol of the FIFA World Cup – 2010… ole, ole…
Ole, ole… U.S.A., Mexico, Honduras , Brasil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile… ole, ole…
We’ll be happy if one of the “Magnificent Seven” brought “The Cup” back home to the “Americas”… ole, ole…
“Champions, World Cup Champs, ole. ole….
Bike Party forever… ole. ole…

Love Bike Party (riding for 8 months in a row now), but dislike the “hooligan” element of it. Please don’t encourage the rampant drunk/loud/brash/@$$hole behavior…… your post even mentions “hooligans on wheels”
scott
June 15, 2010
@Rider Joe – you make some great points… I think a lot of people might take that “hooligan” the wrong way and be a bunch of dumb asses. bp doesn’t need that behavior.
Ian
June 15, 2010
we are trying to take Hooligan back
(see Clerks 2 for the reference)
Besides you don’t have to be a Drunk ahole to be good at tricks. i’d imagine being drunk would make most bike tricks harder
billy
June 15, 2010
You going to wear a shirt with “Hooligan 4 Life” on the back then?
Tanner
June 15, 2010
sorry … “hooligan” sounded better than “soccer fans”. We can change it to “futbol fanatics on wheels” if you like, but the trick comp stays the same.

From “urban dictionary”
1. hooligan 389 up, 66 down
a thug who reguarly goes to football matches and starts fights with opposing supporters and is symbolised usually by: Burberry Hat, Stone Island Jacket,Lacoste Trainers,Tight Fitted Adidas/Nike Trousers And Usually Has a can of Stella or brick in hand. Also, they reguarly make up abusive chants on the terraces to threaten and strike fear into the other team and their traveling supporters.

^okok. But you got to admit, they got the look we need for this ride. So… DRESSING LIKE ONE DOESNT MEAN YOU HAVE TO ACT LIKE ONE. It’s just like Halloween …Cept on wheels … And everyone obeys the traffic laws … And you don’t wake up on a couch with someone elses costume on wondering where you parked your car …
Ian
June 15, 2010
billy … i just might… at least in tape

Well if the night gets rowdy, there is always “ride to the front”. Because I don’t notice the drunk trailer trash usually working very hard to catch up.
Once they are behind you, you don’t notice them as much. And being at the back, they don’t get run over by other cyclists nearly as bad when they fall off their bike drunk.

“Futbol fans” works. Keep the tricks, but please keep them to the pre-ride. Tricks during the ride are dangerous (I was taken out by a ‘ninja’ trickster on the Stanford ride.) Trick out at meet-ups, and before/after the main ride.
See you all Friday!

June 17, 2010
@ Juarez… not a picky mofo at all. Explain where I was being picky. I just want to ride and get home in one piece. I ride safe and enjoy the music and sights along the route.
Read Bike Party’s own “How we ride”. I just follow that. We have fun, and ride predictably. It’s the ones that ride drunk and disorderly, without lights, or run stop lights that ruin it for the majority of the riders, and give SJBP a bad rep. Do that on your own time so you don’t injure others, or as I said, trick out at the meetups, and pre/post ride.

Folks, let’s calm down. The worries over attracting “unsavory” elements to 2010 World Cup Ride is well warranted given our history and experience.
We have seen some drastic improvement over the past two months. So there is a positive outlook and a belief that we have finally turned the corner and tamed our troublesome “beast”.
Many of us BIRDs are “cautiously” optimistic, but we can’t relax — we can’t drop our guard.
Heck, if South Africa can throw a “world-party” where upwards of 100,000′s “Futbol-fanatics” can have safe and awesome-fun celebrations around the clock; then, why can’t SJBP replicate that kind of environment for 3500 to 5000 bicyclist here in the South Bay???!!!
Talk to your friends, your neighbors, your homies, your groups, and your guests.
Tell them what we are about and please explain that they must abide by SJBP’s code of conduct.
The safety of every bicyclist is SJBP’s primary concern.
Let’s keep it very safe and have the maximum fun while keeping the positive Bike Party vibe going strong!

Navtej – the Cupertino testride has been added to the posting. Since you’re starting near the Barnes & Noble on Stevens Creek, maybe you can swing by and pick up the Bike Snob
(http://www.chroniclebooks.com/bikesnob/, http://bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com ). Doesn’t look like he’ll be ready to roll until 7:30pm though.

Jodi,
as another parent who brings my 7 year old daughter on rides for the most part you should be fine.
however my biggest concern with kids riding on a group ride like this is how are their bike handling skills? some of our riders weave a fair bit at lights and have to be dodged…
the way i deal with this with my daughter is we use a Trailer bike and she is attached to my bike behind me.

AuToNoMouS and SJBP!!! help us help you
In order to have a great safe SJBP we need to notify the CAR community. its best to call the radio stations during rush hour traffic 4p-6p.
Call and say that we will be riding through the east part of san jose and if they’ll be in the area go to SJbikeparty.org to get the exact map so they d…ont hit MAJOR BICYCLE TRAFFIC. lets share the road not take it.
