Really?  How do we prevent riders who litter, ride recklessly, or are their to destroy things from riding the ride?

I don't think you really can stop them or their behavior. If you're an adult and you still need to be told, hey, don't act like a jerk, being drunk in public is not cool, or don't ride your bike recklessly when you're packed tight with hundreds of other riders, then you probably are never going to hear or seriously consider that message.

I love SJBP. But because it is an open event, you can't stop jerks from participating. And the bigger SJBP gets, the more jerks will show up for it.

The size of the ride is at the point now that unless the overall group decides to turn on bad riders, they will continue to come. The group is too large for the ride organizers or any small group of people to make that difference. But let's be candid: most people who do SJBP aren't interested in policing others, playing that role. I think I'm like the vast majority of SJBP participants: I just want to ride with my friends.

If I were tasked or asked to tell other people to cool it, unless EVERYONE around me were doing the same thing, I'm not interested in that. Everyday life for most people is already too full of conflict and having to deal with shit people, I know I don't want to have to deal with more of it, especially when I just want to ride my bike.

So I hate to say it, but unless the tone of the overall group changes and everyone shouts down the jerks, more of them will continue to show up. And the more of them that show up, the more likely other people will drop out because people come to ride and have fun, not to deal with jerks.

I really hope I am totally wrong and things work out and the jerks tone it down/go away. But I dunno…. So far the cops have been very cool about it all and the jerks have been more annoying than dangerous. But all it takes is one confrontation between jerk and motorist or one insult from jerk to cop and it'll be all over. I don't know that that can be prevented if the number of jerks keep increasing.

What would you be willing to do?

Say “stay on the right”  “left turn ahead” or nothing at all?

I also personally get tired of yelling at assholes, but I am not willing to say nothing at all.

You are hardly an 'asshole' or a jerk if you need to be reminded once-in-awhile to stay to the right or that a turn is coming up. Telling a fellow SJBP participant that is simply doing them a favor and looking out for their (and your own) safety. Most SJBP participants already do or say these sorts of things.

Jerks and assholes are the ones who are drunk or openly drink/toke; people who charge up through cyclists without warning; mouth off to cops; tangle with motorists; and others who exhibit such jerk, assholish, and/or anti-social behavior.

I'm not going to yell at assholes. Why? Because I simply don't want the inevitable confrontation with said assholes. I don't need or want someone rolling up to me and saying, 'What the fuck did you say to me?' If not yelling at assholes constitutes '(saying)' nothing at all', then that's fine with me.

There are certainly a number of minor responsibilities that come with riding in any large group of cyclists: calling out obstacles or dangers, reminding folks to stay to the right when needed, and so forth. But dealing with asswipe riders in SJBP isn't going to be one of them for most SJBP participants. I think I am like most SJBP participants: I just want to ride, if it comes down to having to deal with too many assholes, adios SJBP.

I think a lot of the riders on SJBP are quite inexperienced when it comes to #1 urban cycling and #2 group riding (also consider LARGE group riding).  SJBP is a great opportunity to share the “Good News” of fun social rides in a great city.  I think some good advice that has been stated is to police ourselves as a group.  One jerk wouldn't stand up to 10 riders around him or her saying to chill or knock it off or just getting boos.  Its like the schoolyard bully that is doing something wrong to one kid.  When the other kids get together, and say something during an incident.  The bully might back down or he could confront.  Now I'm not condoning getting physical with any of these Jerks, (but if it came to that, defend yourself)  I'm thinking the bad behavior is happening because they are not feeling accountable for it.  They probably don't care about SJBP like most of the riders in the forum and planning commitee.  So maybe we could just have some SJBP bouncers that would be the law. Haha JK.  I'm honestly going to stand up and say something if someone is near me on the next ride doing something destructive.  I wish there was a way we could blackball people that cause trouble.  I just can't think of a feasible method.

DJ, that really is the problem: you can't blackball people from any open event. Even if the group or its organizers wanted to, you couldn't stop people from simply bicycling along, even if it were among your group.

If/when SJBP ends, it'll probably be because of the troublemakers. They are not accountable to anyone because of the very nature of SJBP being an open event. And because troublemakers feel more emboldened to act up while in a group, SJBP is a perfect setting.

My only hope is that it never gets ugly, like a physical altercation or the cops having no choice but to arrest some people. Frankly, I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. I hope it never happens.

Hopefully SJBP doesn't end. I'm finally gonna try to comeout to the next one. But I think one of the causes this could end, would be when the bikers continue to pass thru red lights. The drivers get angry and curse at bikers. That might end to a physical altercation. Frown
