We’ve all heard stories about people discovering or rediscovering a love for bicycling after seeing or participating in San Jose Bike Party. Or tales from people who have been inspired to ride further than they ever have before. Many are learning that the bicycle is a viable mode of transportation for commuting or running errands. Others are seeing their health and fitness levels improve dramatically from getting off the couch and into the saddle.
And it’s not all just about the bicycle. The diversity of Bike Party ridership is an amazing sight to see, and many friendships and other bonds have formed during the ride.
Has SJBP stoked your love for bicycling? What do you love about SJBP? Got a story to share? Post it here!

I discovered San Jose Bike Party in the late summer of 2009. I dusted off my old ten speed and drove it to the start point for my first SJBP experience. Although never a serious cyclist, I had always loved riding my bicycle as a kid and used it as my primary form of transportation while in college. But in the years since then, I hardly rode it at all.
Since my first SJBP ride, I’ve done many test rides and have rarely missed the main events. Completing these rides inspired me to start commuting to work via bicycle. I now regularly go a distance I used to think was too far to ride. As a result, I’m filling up the gas tank about half as often as before. I also stopped driving to SJBP events, preferring to ride from home so I could enjoy the event completely car free. I’ve also discovered the feasibility of taking Caltrain, BART, and VTA with my bike, which greatly enhances my range.
I finished my first ever century ride on the second Bike The Limits ride, and repeated that feat this year. I figure I ride between 300-500 miles a month now, compared to probably 100 miles total in the many years before I discovered SJBP.
SJBP has brought me in better touch with my community. I’ve visted parts of the city that I’d never seen before and discovered interesting shops and restaurants, particularly in the downtown area. I’ve always marveled at the diversity of riders that I meet on the ride, and have enjoyed having the chance to make friends with people I would never have gotten to know otherwise.

My hipster brother who thought SJBP was small fries, was astonished at the community and size of our beloved BP. Everyone keep it up! And great job to the brave BIRDS. Keep all that good stuff up everyone.

I’m sorry to sound nit-picky. But if you guys couldn’t read it was “For the ladies.” Why would it be necessary to not share the route? You guys know how to find a link, do you guys know how to read the whole thing before actually going?
This ladies ride seemed special over the others. Yes there was bad apples who felt like making an excuse to crash a bike party for delinquency. But was easy to spot them out since it’s a smaller ride.
But I did notice some (not sure if they were the same) males who came without a female actually jump in and volunteer doing turns. Now that’s exactly what the message was in helping out the female riders with a less intimidating ride.

About 2yrs. ago my boyfriend spotted a tandem covered with dust and webs in an old shed that had been sitting for over 20yrs. He paid $60 for it, and we spent 5hrs cleaning and steelwooling it, by 9:30 that evening it was nice n clean. We put air in the old cracked tires and rode it that night. We couldn’t believe they actually held air. With in that week we heard about SJBP and we rode our first 27 mile ride. I think it was “Ride like a pirate” theme. It was the most fun I had had in ages. At that time I lived 4hrs away and traveled once a month to SJBP. We shared our experience with all our friends n family back home and have started a Bike Party there. I have since moved here to San Jose and now find myself traveling back home 4hrs to ride there once a month. Were a small group but growing fast with up to 130 riders and also doing the theme rides. We started with a tandem and have caught the bike fever BAD. we each have 3 bikes plus and growing. We use to ride our Harley on weekends and thought that was fun. Since we found SJBP, our Harley sits, we take it out once a month just to keep the battery charged. Then were back on our bikes peddeling down town or to the ice cream shop or what ever excuse we can find to get out on our bikes. Thank you for all for all your hard work and opening our eyes to good ole fashion fun. See you all on the next ride.

I’ve had a life-long joy for bicycling – long before I know about bike party. I’ve never owned a car (fuck that shit!), so bicycle = freedom.
But bike party (not just San Jose Bike Party, but also Peninsula Bike Party, East Bay Bike Party, San Francisco Bike Party, and the other smaller groups) have brought this joy to a new level – I have found My People. Bike Party is the first group I’ve ridden with that truly welcomes everyone and rides for pure bicycle joy.
I wish to see the Bike Party Movement spread across the nation and world so that everyone has a chance to experience the same joy that I do. Thank You, San Jose Bike Party, for getting it all started in the San Francisco Bay Area.
