January provided San Jose Bike Party clear skies and a full moon while the 20+ mile ride navigated streets in South SJ. One volunteer counted about 1200 riders leaving the starting location at the now defunct Capitol 16 movie theaters. Even as the ride pulled out of the starting location, participants were arriving and rushing to find their friends who were waiting for them. Volunteers were very evident on this ride, posting up on corners, shouting out ‘car back’ or ‘move to the right’, and helping wherever it was needed. At the first regroup many people helped by bringing trash bags and staying longer than other riders to help reduce our impact. We can’t thank you guys enough!
Many first time participants were eager to give SJ Bike Party a shot and it was great to meet so many new faces. Noticeably more riders had flats this ride and amazingly even more people were stopping to help someone out, whether to inflate a tire or provide a fresh tube.
It was great to see so many people embrace the ‘orange theme’ and represent this by having all manner of costuming. Some riders proudly wore their Giants gear and others had shirts or sweaters or oversize orange glasses on. Bicycles were decorated and beyond the basic lights, we saw so many led’s and wheels that were brilliant and cool. A big shout out goes to the people who bring sound trailers or systems. This always makes the ride more enjoyable for everyone.
Please join us again in February and consider bringing a trash bag or helping out any way you can.
Bike Party!

Great bike party! I’m so glad to be back after missing out for three months! Holy orange!
I loved how friendly everyone at bike party is! My back tire had a flat and someone told me! I didn’t even know (THANK YOU SIR) and then I didn’t have a pump on me, so then another person asked me if I needed one. He then helped me pump my tire until it was all goody and ready to go! (THANK YOU SIR #2)
I loved how nice and short this ride was! Perfect weather condition, nice drives, nice bikers, and the second regroup was just right outside my house! Funsies. I took my cousin along for her first time and she enjoyed it very much!

My son was jumped by a bunch of punks who hit his girl friend and beat him up and stole his glasses. I was at bike party and when I called my son I was at the second regroup. When he told me he got jumped I started looking at everyone driving into the regroup. I saw some loser riding my sons bike so I told my boyfriend to follow him and we confronted him. I grabbed the bike and the cops came. We did not get any of the other losers who beat on my son or his girlfriend. We got the bike back but would of like to have people of been in custody for their actions. The guy that had my sons bike was under eighteen and was going to juvenile hall for having stolen property. The cops said there was really nothing that will happen to him.

At the tail of the first regroup, some dude tells my buddy and I some people had just strong armed him for his wheels (he was carrying his frame around). Also tells me the people were still there, hanging around a pickup truck.
So I tell him and his friends to get the plate number of the truck, a description of the perp, and to call 9-1-1; but then he tells me he doesn’t want that to happen. Whatever.
Other than this, it seemed like a great party; my friends had a wonderful time and we look forward to next month. Thanks everybody!

I was severely disappointed to hear how someone close to the core of SJbp was tagging on a street corner…and even more saddened when I saw they had did it along the entire route.
….but unless some one shuts down a party then it will go on! Still had a great time. I was approached on multiple occasions asking how much to build a music trailer and how much I would charge

Ed would be able to describe him better, but he says it is someone we all know. Someone that’s always around. If I had witnessed first hand I might know. I’ll call him not a co-star, but definitely a regular if that makes sense. Probably makes a few more appearances than me at various outings. I will see if Ed remembers more descriptive details.

This was a great ride for me, but there was a strong buzz all night about the large number of douchebag youth out showing off their raging hormones (or something like that). Didn’t see any red light runners, but salmon were prevalent and the incidents at the start and first regroup spread their stench. Pretty sad those little pricks have no other way to express their “fuck the man” attitude than by crashing a bicycle party. How insignificant can one be? Really sad. And what’s with the tagging?!? Anyone get a picture of the idiot?
But despite these few party crashers, the ride went pretty well. The crossing over 101 resulted in a long line of cars waiting on the ramp, but Ian and I stopped the group for a time to let them clear. Lots of music, lots of food vendor trucks (but I missed the hot dog guys), and excellent weather. And the route worked very well.
Thanks everyone, for a great time!!!

Anytime one has a public event there is always the risk that trouble makers will show up. I think the important thing is that these individuals aren’t defining SJBP. The county & city all know the SJBP volunteers are working hard to create a positive community event – and they appreciate it.
The key to limiting (or better yet eliminating) trouble makers is to have more people intervene . There are not enough birds to watch every set of kids. Thus we need to encourage riders to stop when they see anything illegal or unsafe & remind the individuals that improper behavior is not acceptable.
Carrie
January 24, 2011
The more trouble makers show up the more dangerous it can be for someone to step up and stop there actions. My boyfriend and I always make comments to stop an at Red lights or stay on the right side of the road and the trouble makers are very inappropriate to us. I would be afraid to tell the losers out there smoking the pot and drinking along the ride and littering cause now they are impaired and might start a fight.

I wish I had seen it. I’m tired of the “PUNKS” ruining events like this for everyone. I saw too many riders flying through reds and needlessly riding opposite of traffic. Not to mention the mean spirit of people in autos when we got in proximity of “the hood”. Had I seen Carries son being “jumped”……….. well being @6’4” & 240lbs and carrying mace I would have no trouble intervening. So sad, looks like it’s time to volunteer to be a bird.

Thank you to all riders who participate in organizing the chaos. Every piece of trash you pick up, every turn you call out, every new rider you encourage to ride right, every time you echo a BIRD, every time you yell back Bike Party is a step closer to a successful night.

For me this ride was a mixed bag. Although I’ve met some nice fellow riders, there were more than the usual amount of drunks and riders who just don’t care. I witnessed numerous incidents of riding on the wrong side of the road–twice even directly in front of a cop cruiser. I counted 4 pile ups directly in front of me, and along at least a mile rode in someone’s pot trail. I’m saddened to hear that there was at least one brawl. With that in mind, I will be rethinking my plan to bring my children to the ride this summer.
The Nov and Dec rides were fantastic especially considering the weather. The only riders who showed up were people who actually enjoyed riding not the fair weather ones who use the party as an excuse to be lawless. I wonder if a longer ride or one with more climbing at the beginning would discourage more of the losers?
Another approach to help figure out a solution to this issue might be to start a database and begin to keep statistics of each ride. We can tally neighborhoods, time of year, weather, length of ride, number of incidents, number of total riders, bike type, degree of hooliganism, etc. Once we begin to accumulate data, we might be able to extract some kind of correlation and route our rides accordingly or not, but we certainly will understand the problem more than we do now.
At the risk of sounding elitist, I will go out on a limb and say what most of us are afraid to say, but nearly every incident I’ve witnessed in the past year and half of attending SJBP religiously have been perpetrated by males in their teens to early twenties with fixie/faux fixies. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but has anyone else seen as many if any blatant disregard of “how we ride” by mtb’ers, roadies, comfort bikers, cruisers, or even bmxers? I’m not saying all fixie/single-speeders are hooligans, but there certainly exists a small but noticeable element with that group who are consistently causing trouble.

1. A MapMyRide list which contains all SJBP routes is nearly completed and will soon be posted on the Blog. Just by looking back at the reflections (and the SJBP wiki, in the sidebar over there <—) for each of the rides we will be able to extract certain amount of data about neighborhoods, attendance, and weather. Cool, huh?!
2. Sorry SK8DAD, you ended up sounding like an elitist. Your mere words further made it hard for people like me, who rides fixed, to ride the streets of SJ comfortably without a stereotype pinned to my back. Our volunteers ride all kinds of bikes, and so do our hooligans (… except for recumbent riders … they are usually are laid back.)
3. I think by far the best way to understand the problems that Bike Party faces is to come to the testrides and the "thinktank" at the volunteer meetings.
Thanks for your input!

January 24, 2011
Tanner,
Sorry to offend you and any LEGITIMATE fixie/fauxie rider out there. That was not my intention. By legitimate, I refer to a rider who has respect for the sport and care about propagating it positively. You are obviously an active member of SJBP birds and care, very much, about the longevity of the event. I salute you. At the same time I believe you should not feel as defensive as you seem to be because my comments above obviously applies to “a small but noticeable element with that group”. My rant is not one of fixies vs the rest of the cycling world, but rather, the band wagon riders who, as of the current trend, happen to choose fixed gear bicycles as vehicles for anarchy. They are certainly not choosing recumbant bikes–right? Not yet at least. Honestly, I would be equally vehement if my experiences were with mtb hooligans, or roadie hooligans or any other form of cycling hooliganism. Yes, I think it sucks that your discipline, once revered as the purest form of cycling, is now inundated with such regrettable personalities, nevertheless, you cannot dismiss the reality of the current trend, can you?
Since starting my SJBP attendance, I’ve had to yell at numerous people to, stop for the red, stay to the right, look out, car back, etc. In almost all the cases where the riders did not respond or responded in an antagonistic manner, the riders in question are the stereotype I mentioned above. Really, it’s not that hard, even for the casual SJBP rider to distinguish. They usually come in one form..that is…groups of 5-10 riders (teens to early 20s), none of whom have helmets or lights. They usually have poor riding technique and no regard for other riders around them. Screaming obscenities as they ride, weaving in and out, riding on the opposite side of the road–not just singularly, but as a massive group. Racing past people in close proximity, unwilling to listen to birds. Slamming into people at the red lights.
Yes, I’m just a singular perspective, and perhaps, my view is skewed–maybe I’ve just been unlucky, but being aware of this possibility is why I proposed keeping track of the statistics. I challenge others here on the forum to log their experiences. I can certainly stand to be corrected if I were presented with evidence otherwise.
Whether or not my generalizations are true, the need to do targeted enforcement of “how we ride” is not an entirely terrible idea other than being somewhat politically incorrect. I think that we birds simply need to group closer to observed trouble makers to show more of a united presence, and just how do you do that? Identifying trouble makers is where we get into the whole PC debate isn’t it?

Bad Sk8dad. First of all, I ride a MTN bike for the shorter rides and a SS road bike for the longer rides. “Faux Fixie” is a rediculous term. I’m not tryin to look like I’m on a fixed gear, just tired of adjusting annoying derailleurs. I’m 36y/o and the bike I ride has nothing to do with my attitude or my maturity level. You can’t judge a book by it’s cover. There are guys out there on “lowrider bikes” with club patches on their vests that say things like “I’m here to fuck shit up.” These guys are some of the coolest cats out there and in my opinion, true hardcore bicyclists to be riding 20mi + on their stylish yet ineficient bikes. Get over yourself dude. There are idiots from any group you care to designate. Fixies are the big “fad” these days and maybe one of the most popular style of bikes showing up to the parties. If you do the math, it’s only natural that the majority of idiots will be on these bikes. I do agree that most of the troublemakers are from the age groups you specified but that is a global issue. Wherever you go, whatever you are doing, young males will rebel against the “establishment”. I went through that phase myself and recognize the rediculousness of it. I don’t know if there’s anything that can be done about this ongoing problem aside from going underground and making it an “invitation only” event. But that’s not what SJBP is about. Maybe instead of pointing fingers and generalizing, bust out your camera and document the event you disapprove of. Maybe we could make a “Wall of Shame” on the SJBP website and we can publicly ridicule the individuals in question and not worry about what they ride. Now that I think about it……what was the point of singling out the single speeds? Would you like SJBP to ban all Fixies and “Faux Fixies”? Get real.

This last Friday was my first ride with the group. I’ve wanted to go for some time, but it just never has worked out until this last Friday. With me were three others, my wife and her best friend who had never done the ride, and another of our friends who is a semi-pro cyclist type.
Three of us were on our mountain bikes and hybrid and had a great time. Since in our group most of us are not pro bikers or interested in spending more than $150 on a bike (including lights, locks etc.) it was nice to see that many of the riders there were also casual and not pro. If it were all serious cyclists I more than likely would have decided to not go again.
That said, while I did smell some weed for a bit, which honestly doesn’t bother me at all, I didn’t see any noticeably drunk bikers. In fact I don’t think I even saw anyone drinking anything except at the first rest stop area by great oaks and Santa Teresa.
Then again, I wasn’t looking for them and I didn’t even know there was a fight until I saw the comment on here about it. I was focused on my friends and our ride and taking in the experience of people shouting out Bike Party along the way. I had a fun time and would go back. Sorry to hear that others didn’t.

Just so happens there are a few folks that are good enough to be world class, but have not yet gained enough wins to accumulate enough points to be given that distinction.

This was my 4th or 5th Bike Party and though I wasn’t thrilled about the route at first, it was overall pretty fun. The freeway overpasses did cause some angry motorists though. I saw about 3 crashes, which was the usual par for the course (young guys either showing off or not riding safely), the precursor to a fight (still unconfirmed if punches were thrown), and even the riders that were intoxicated were tolerable (the three girls passing 40 ozs in front of me). I’m definitely not happy with guys that were equipped with motors (who was the Whizzer guy that jousted?), but this is nothing new. Although I didn’t see him fire it up (I don’t think he even was on the ride, just at the 1st regroup), this other kid did, a few times in front of us and it was annoying. You either power by pedal or don’t crash the party. Does anyone know why the tshirt guy didn’t commemorate the occasion?

I got both of the bike party stickers I have at rides I attended. Every now and then somebody makes a sticker. I’ve not seen any for a while. The general rule about vendors is buy it if you like their product. Usually they go away unless we support them.
As for fliers, the route sheet kind of works as a flier. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just download something like that from the website? Just print it out and cut each page into four fliers or something like that.

I did see from a distance some kind of fight at one of the regroups but it cleared out pretty fast. I like the idea another person posting saying that SJPD should ride along with SJ Bike Party. Why not? It may help limit the youngooligans from drinking and causing trouble. I ride to have a good time and enjoy a nice ride with friends and meet new friends while seeing some really cool bikes. Now the idea is @ your next event is to create T-shirts w/the bike party logo & sell the shirts and also help promote the event. So if your interested please contact Matthew Angeles @ [phone number redacted] so we may get copy write permission, thanks for your time & understanding & I look forward to your next event! I’ll be there either way, GOD BLESS
[mod email is probably the best way to reach us. Please don't post your phone number in public places:) ]
