Themes are always optional and are supposed to be fun
be creative….
theres lots of outfits that still meet S&M without letting the girls out.

s&m = snow & mud? sports & memorabilia??
can anyone think of a “s&m” reference to our beloved Giants?
cuz i know watching em has been pleasure and pain and agony this year. lol

I see on the forums that some people are offended by this month’s theme. My gut reaction to their’s is to quote Margaret Thatcher: “…one must never under-estimate the levity of a situation.”
If you need to laugh a bit more about this, check out the scene between Cloris Leachman and Harvey Corman in Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety. (I guess it’s only in the more recently released “director’s cut” version.)
However, being a regular recumbent rider, doing bike party on a conventional bike will be masochistic enough for me. No costumes required.

Hey Steve,
Love ya man!
Of course, the first thing I want to ask/tease you about is, ‘So is High Anxiety a highbrow movie?’ (but people that aren’t following our comments from previous months won’t get why I asked you that.)
Interesting thoughts. It might sound like I’m splitting hairs here. Honestly, it’s not that I’m offended. More like disappointed. Truly, when I was in my early 20′s I would have been all over this theme, loving it, disagreeing with anybody who thought it wasn’t appropriate. When I first saw it I thought, ‘well, I don’t agree with it but I’ll keep that to myself. I feel pretty fortunate that the organizers of BP include me in their fun and I realize that my views do not reflect the majority of the other cyclists.’ But as I saw other cyclists voicing their concerns, and I realized that they were expressing themselves with the same issues I had but saying it in ways that I couldn’t articulate, I decided to speak up and share my views.
To everybody riding the main ride this month. Enjoy! Have a blast! Seriously. I’m confident that you all will have a great time and the words I’ve typed will prove to be unfounded. It’s just not my scene, that’s all. I know the media and Hollywood are great at showing the lighter side of S&M. I know that some people really do enjoy that as a form of their sexual expression. I’m fine with that. No problem at all. Enjoy!
But I also know that sexual slavery is a huge problem in America today and BDSM among vulnerable and exploited women is something that I just hate, despise, loathe, and abhor. And I have difficulty separating in my mind the lighter side of S&M and the brutal exploitative side of BDSM. Sorry man, it’s just my hangup.

I think you may be taking the theme a little to seriously.
Good thing that you didn’t take the pirate theme this seriously cause those guys really didn’t wear mascara and sit around drinking all day…
Anyhow i hope everyone can keep the theme in perspective of what bike party themes have always been about… having a good time…

October 28, 2010
Justin T you are correct, that was a solid response.
Ian, you are correct, I am taking this theme a little too seriously.
SteveSgt, you are correct, I underestimate the levity of this situation.
Like I said, it’s just my hangup.
No worries guys, have fun.

IMO there’s a pretty big difference between a pirate theme and an adult S&M theme…

SteveSgt – If you are referring to my posts you are mistaken about me being offended, compared to some of the exotic erotic balls I’ve been to I imagine this will be relatively tame. However I still feel it is inappropriate for bike party to have such an in-your-face adult theme while rolling through neighorhoods, especially given how the website says: “Help us to make the ride more family-friendly.”
Bike party has become large through the years and has community impact, through the publicity that gets generated as well as to the neighorhood that we ride through.
For the former I do not care to have my colleagues and non-riding friends perceive bike party as an exotic erotic activity and by extension my participation in it as a rider and a bird. As to impact on neighorhoods, I do not imagine parents with young kids are going to appreciate stepping into a ‘teachable moment’ when they go outside with their kids to wave at all the riders as they go by, one reason why I do not care to be riding next to someone that is dressed for S&M.
Since this is supposed to be fun this bird won’t be participating on this ride, but have fun everyone and I wish you all the best – I’ll still go to this ride’s test rides which are lots of fun too

Honestly, I was a bit confused with this months bike party title. I thought it infered a ride with hills and mud, rocks and wild animals. Just extreme, brutal. I emphasize brutal. I’ll take it as artistic and poetic as possible. It is a surprise and kind of Jackass, as in the movie/show. I’ll own this.

With the recent issues of bikes and cars sharing the roads, maybe S&M stands for: Smash & Mash
or
Squished & Mangled

The guy who’s been making the banners for the rides (nice job by the way) needs to make on for the S&M ride. I wont have a spoke card to make for this ride.
