Light Rider Route

At long last, we have our final route mapped for Friday’s ride.

Route for June Ride

Route for June Ride

Check the map here:

June 2009 Bike Party route on Map My Ride

Thanks to Justin, Scott, Jeff, and everyone else who helped – yes, we’re last-minute again, but this was a really hard one to plan (tough neighborhoods with few parking lots) and everyone put in their volunteering overtime on this one.  Nice work!  As always, we will need more folks to help plan next month’s ride, the earlier the better.  We try to get a test ride in – join the route conversation on the forums.

Highlights/Stats for this ride:

  • 17.5 mi total from Dick’s Center to end at SJSU fountain
  • Scenic rides through the Shasta/Hanchett Rosegarden neighborhood, small hill/night view above East Side SJ, ride through Alum Rock neighborhood, and a visit to the underused but awesome Mexican Heritage Plaza.
  • Farthest Northeast Bike Party has ever ridden (farthest East was actually Southeast to Silver Creek/Brigadoon, over a year ago) – deepest into East Side we’ve ever gone
  • Alum Rock hill = average climb of 2% grade, maximum 4% grade for last 1/4mi only.  Downhill is average 3% grade down for 1 mile – whee!

Remember to stop at ALL red lights. Experienced riders, we need you! Show up early to earn your BIRD shirts and help keep our ride well-organized and smooth-flowing!

Shout out to Nick and Amber too!

This will be a fun ride and the weather’s supposed to be warmer. Woot Woot!

If you’ve never done a ride, this is not a race except for the first bunch or riders. lol We’re here to have fun and “light up” the night.

I hope the SJBP Birds idea works because we really need help… especially with the lead group! We need to stay on course and follow the route and drive the group DEEP into the parking lots – especially at the Mexican Heritage Plaza. We have 1000 riders that have to get completely off of the streets!

For those that can’t do the whole ride – this is a loop that shortcuts can be taken but I hope the main riders don’t follow the shortcutters on Kirk, White, etc.. Or I guess you could even start in the any of the three neighborhoods we’re going thru. LOL

Have fun and chill at the red lights!!
($300 ticket for running a red light? Hell no!)

Looks like it’s gonna be almost 70 degrees for the start of SJBP and about 63 degrees at the end of the ride at SJSU. ;-)

You’ll have a blast on this ride, no worries about that Mark! The Alameda, Alum Rock, 11th St., all good. Just have lights on your bike. A couple of areas are a bit dark but other areas are places to show off some crazy lighting too.

Neo — many small groups will head back, most likely san carlos west to bascom south. Ask around.
-or-
last light rail to bascom leaves santa clara at 11:39 and last light rail to mt view leaves about 11:45
-or-
youcan park your car in many validated lots in dt SJ for $3 and take light rail (for $1.75?) out to Dicks.

I wish the light rail didn’t end so early! ;-(

Garrett – Fantastic Pics!! Now that we have a talk thread about the ride, it’d be great if you could post them there and add any feedback!

Additionally, these are fantastic photos!!! Incredibly good quality and really do capture the essence of the ride. Thank you!
