- Volunteer Today – Become a BIRD!
*** UPDATED 9pm, Sept. 16th — How to Get the Treasure Map? Scroll to the bottom of this event listing – via “Continue Reading –>”! Note: Comments Closed***
Arr, his be a great ride for costumes you scurvy dogs, even wearing a stinkin bandana can make you look a bit ‘ore lik a pirate! The title “Ride Like a Pirate” has more to do with costumes and getting everyone to join the crew of san jose bike party, to DO something. Pirates don’t give any quarter to stoways.
It does not imply nor are we encouraging people to be jerks and ride illegally. If you want to ride like that, don’t join our ride.
The SJBP “experience” starts @ 7pm, not 8pm!
We have 5+ food vendors – so no need to eat at home – or you’ll miss out on the great sjbp vibe. We roll at 8pm, but the party starts at 7pm! Allow extra time to get to the start!
Check out this video! SJBP Backgrounder
Get Involved – Volunteer!
Because we are volunteers, we need your help. The more people willing to help with the ride, the better the ride will become!!
How We Ride!
If you follow these eight rules, Bike Party will be safe and a positive place for riders, drivers, pedestrians, and the community
1. Stay in the right lane when possible. NEVER ride the sidewalk. NEVER ride against oncoming traffic.
2. Pick up your trash, leave nothing behind.
3. Stop at red lights – behind cars already there. Let cars “out.”
4. Ride straight, ride predictability.
5. Roll past conflict.
6. Leave no one behind.
7. Ride sober! It’s illegal and dangerous to ride a bicycle inebriated.
8. Communicate to fellow riders! (We need your help to remind those who aren’t following the rules!)
Remember, Arrive Closer to 7pm, not 8pm!
If you follow the top header, notice 7pm, not 8pm. Get there early and enjoy the Bike Party vibe!
We make sure there are food vendors at the site for you to eat. Bring cash. These are great food and great value for all of us. So make sure to get to work early, have a big lunch and leave work early or on time to make sure to join us!
*** HOW TO GET THE TREASURE MAP ***
Ahoy!Last month’s ride was frought with Disresprectful Scallywags and Drunken Rascals abound. This ride’s route has a limited distribution – if ye are a responsible rider ye must TALK TO A PIRATE VOLUNTEER to stand a chance at finding ye a treasure map!
That’s right, treasure maps aren’t just thrown about the interwebs like Davey Jones’ candied bones. Volunteers [BIRDs] on this crazy ship we call Bike Party know where X marks the spot.
If yer true of heart AND ye can abide by the pirate law of HOW WE RIDE then ye best call a PARROT with a map. And if you don’t know a volunteer or a BIRD it may be best for the cold innards ye calls a soul to get to know one or better yet… become one….ARRRR!
Volunteer – Step Up!
Want to give back to Bike Party tonight? We count on volunteers to make this party happen… Thank You!

Thanks David for making these & Paul for the original art work!

[mod/tr: we had 2 choices - cancel the ride or do what we're doing. yes it's not ideal, but the mass of riders has not forced the DBs to walk the plank and 700+ have followed their dumbass ways... it's gotten way too crazy, including 700-1000 not following the "how we ride" and...vandalism, stolen items from stores, busted cars, drivers yelled at, BIRDs told to "F#&K off" and 2 accidents (both the riders fault-one could have been fatal) etc]

Those unhappy about the secret route this month should understand how this came about. For the last few months, the “reflections” threads have bristled with impatience (from riders and residents alike) to do something about the douchbags. Many proposals have been floated including canceling the ride for a month. I myself proposed this secret route idea a few months ago.
Though I thought I was the originator of this idea, a little BIRD told me a similar idea had been floated more than a year ago. Back then, the leadership decided not to implement it, feeling the problems were not bad enough to justify going to that trouble. In recent months, however, problems have gotten bad enough to convince the leadership to reconsider.
Those whining about this should ask themselves two questions:
1) Did I contribute to the problems getting this bad?
2) What can I do to prevent this from happening again?
Every month, organizers urge riders to step up and become BIRDS. If even 10% of riders did so, we wouldn’t be in this situation now. Did YOU volunteer?
Every month, we urge every rider to heed “How We Ride.” The rules include not only stopping for red lights and staying to the right, but also communicating with other riders (ie. when you see a douchebag, remind him/her How We Ride). If even half the riders followed all these rules, we wouldn’t be in this situation now. Did YOU follow all 8 rules?
If you never did these things, then you have been, at best, a freeloader, enjoying the fruits of BIRD labor without pitching in. This is the month when Mother Hen finally says, “I shall enjoy Bike Party myself.”
Rather than whining, you should be considering how you will pitch in in the future to ensure a secret route is never again needed.
The next time you attend Bike Party, be sure to follow all 8 rules. Join the occasional test ride (A recent test ride took place on a Friday night, so drop the “I can’t make test rides” BS. If you can make the monthly ride, you can make at least some test rides.). Become a BIRD.
If everyone does these things, we will never again need a secret start location. If only YOU do these things, then the next time we have a secret route, you’ll be one of those entrusted with the secret.

I would just like to know where to go to for the start. Also I would volunteer to be a bird but no one in this entire thing of comments mentions how to become one. Please if you are a bird email me I only want to know the start.

My husband and i are visiting pirates from Indiana. (We are here awaiting the birth of our first pirate grandbaby). Therefore we have no way of knowing anyone to contact for a map. How can we find the start? We have been avid bicyclists for 35 years. We absolutely abide by all bicycle rules, in fact we are rather militant about that. Our son has told us about this event before and we would love to observe it for ourselves! Please help. Rita

I’m all about secrecy, keeps the jacknobs away. But hear this: I’m no jacknob! That said, I looked to see what I could do to volunteer, but I didn’t find much info under the tab, just some dude who requested a map, then complained about BP ruining his family night. I figured I wouldn’t take that approach of map acquisition.
So here’s the dealio: in order to get to the start point, I’ll offer up a bribe:
For the BIRDs: I will man a corner for half an hour of the ride. (Better than nothing?)
For non-BIRDs: I’ll tell you a funny joke of pirate nature at the beginning of the ride, to ensure your spirits are lifted.
For the single ladies: My phone number. (Better than nothing?)
I’d volunteer to be a full up BIRD, but if I remember correctly (Again, don’t see too much in the get involved tab), your guys’ schedules for test rides, meetings, etc. directly overlap with my and my riding friends’ schedule for teaching marching band. How can you be worried about people who aren’t in, but teach marching band? Friend me up, send me a message, we’ll come to an agreement!

Not a bird. Not able to be a bird or bird groupie at this time. I’m a San Jose native and Bike Party goer since the get (not every ride, but at least 5 ). I haven’t been on a ride since the beginning of the summer. Would love to join this one. But I get what you’re doing. I think it’s a great idea to keep it on the down low because there are a lot of pendejos out there who act foolishly and f-k it up for folks who just want experience bike community at its best.
Sorry I’m missing out. If I had more time and energy, but mostly, time, I would figure out the route. But I don’t. Do yo’ thang. Makes sense, and it should be just so.
Peace and have fun-

Hey Scott,
I sent you a PM via Facebook.
And as for all of you whining, if you really love SJBP–do something! Stand up and at least contribute somehow. I am a volunteer too but I haven’t had a chance to participate on this month’s test ride so obviously like you all even I don’t have the map. However for the love of the ride, I’m bicycling regardless if I don’t get a map, and I’ll be riding the May 2010 route since it crosses through my neighborhood. For those wanting to join me, *MY* wheels depart City Hall at 7.45-8.00 and this will be my last ride in SJ since I’m moving down to LA for school. I will be in a yellow SJBP shirt on a blackish grey mountain bike.

The only problem with the “ask a volunteer for the *treasure map*” idea is the drivers of those dangerous metal boxes can’t see where NOT to drive if they want to avoid the heartache of not being able to get where they want to go. Previously if they wanted to know where the roads would be taken over by bicyclists they could look at the map and plan alternate routes. This flawed “ask a volunteer” makes it that much more difficult for them.
Just my 2¢ worth.

I really doubt that motorists take the time to look up the SJBP route and then do a mental calculation of where the megapeleton will be at any given time. Well, I guess this being Silicon Valley and home to a large number of analytical minds maybe I’m wrong. Arrrrrr !.

September 17, 2010
I can understand why some people are getting angry….but can these same people understand why? SJ Bike Party has been asking and asking for help with keeping people in check during the ride. Just check out the ride comments and each one gets progressively more negative because of people running red lights, littering etc. etc.. So should they keep going the way they are and just wait to be shut down? They put a lot of work into these rides…and it’s THEIR creation…just like the posting above…if you don’t like it…create your own-I know for a fact that there is other rides starting-one in particular every Wednesday here in San Jose tailored towards cruisers.
We all know that if nothing was done…Bike Party was going to be shut down by the city-only rides away-so they are only doing what it takes to keep it alive. For those that are getting mad and starting with the name calling and tough talk….your probably exactly what they don’t need….and for those who really just want to ride-another example of something being taken away because no one did anything to help or try to make a change….sounds familiar? So many examples of this in life where people don’t do a thing to help out but complaint when taken away-that alone could be multiple topics in itself.
So people….don’t be mad-next step would be for the city to shut Bike Party down and no one would ride and thats not cool-for those who have the map-respect the work put into this and be cool with it-with great power comes great responsibility! Bike Party!

Well my first bike party was last month and I would have to agree it was a little crazy with the drunk people and poor judgment of a few people but it was still fun. I was looking forward to Bike Party this today but it seems that the organizers are trying to keep it on the down low. I’m not a drinker and neither are any of my friends which I have encouraged to come to this bike party. I assume there won’t be any food vendors along they way since they won’t have the map either so we’ll make sure to pack our own food. If anyone want to throw me a bone on the meet up point I along with my 5 friends that also want to participate would appreciate it.

I think its interesting that now, when its down to the wire, there is such interest in becoming a BIRD… from what I have seen SJBP has been trying to recruit BIRDS all month.
There are alot of excuses going around, as to why people don’t have time to bird or don’t just don’t want too… Its a shame, everyone is missing the point. If more people would have stepped up at times needed during the rides and helped by being vocal… perhaps this could have been avoided.

Thank you SJBP and fellow flock! We are going to pull this one off. I am so glad we didnt cancel this months ride. Some of you folks dont know how close we were to dropping the hammer. Call it a hunch, I have a feeling that we are going to have some pretty big testrides next month. Building community through cycling … these steps ensure that SJBP will thrive through the next few years. It makes me feel confident that our thinktank community can overcome any obstacle peacefullly and safely. The kids love us … And they deserve a better role model out there on the streets. We arent Critical Mass, or Midnight Ridazz, we are something different and very alive in San Jose. When the masses return I am sure you will like our new look. We are changing bike culture in the valley everyday. Dont wait all month to ride your bike… the streets, trails, hills, mountains are calling you.
Everyone ride safe tonight and thanks for Owning the Ride.

Here is an example of what we need for this ride, the location descriptions are not there, but are identifiable with a map. SJBP is volunteer driven! Sign up below!
Should we have put this out there a few days ago? Maybe, but it’s here now:
Sign up if you dare, with your email address and name. Look at how many key points we need help with. In groups of 2-3 are great. Have FUN with it!
I’m not sure how we tell the difference between someone that truly wants to volunteer and someone that just wants to “game” the system. Help us to understand.
No promises that we can get back to all of you, if you’re just looking to “game the system” then stay home. If someone can help lead/coordinate this, that would be great.
And fill out the “mingle” registration on sjbikeparty.org also!

I got a route!! Woo! (it was surprisingly easy haha).. Hopefully it’s not a fake.. like a route from a past bike party haha Now I’m even more excited about riding tonight!! This was a cool idea.. it really made me think about what I was doing to help out BP and now I’ll definitely be considering joining some of the test rides! It’s funny how some people are genuinely angry about this whole thing.. it’s not like the BIRDS are stopping people from riding their bikes. BP is just something organized by a bunch of regular people like you and me that love cycling… anyone can do it! no one is stopping anybody from going out and riding.
but then again… maybe I’m just saying all of this because I was lucky enough to find the route and if I hadn’t, I’d be as pissed as everyone else? …maybe.. haha LONGLIVEBIKEPARTTYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

(prob need help in getting back to y’all tho, no promises… but filling in this at least show’s you’re trying to help – i hope!)
for the newer riders, sorry you’re in the cross fire, but you can sign up too. it’s a way to pledge your support to “TAKE BACK OUR RIDE” and to
“RESPECT THE HOW WE RIDE” mantra that we have.
remember we need to SHARE THE DAMN ROAD! and stop trashing the SJ roads and regroups!
