Kick off the year Running the Bulls with a mellow OR challenging ride through the Evergreen hills!
We will start together at Eastridge Mall (Eastridge Center) then split horns at Ruby & Quimby, with the “mellow” flatter steer chase heading North and West. The “challenging” steeper bull run will roll East and South. Both rides will meet up again on Yerba Buena road near Hwy 101 to ride to downtown San Jose. We’ll try to keep the mellow steer ride regroups short so we can coordinate both routes to meet at a similar time on Yerba Buena. If you’d like to go back to Eastridge after Regroup #3, simply take a right on Tully Rd.
TIME: Show up by 7:30pm – Wheels hit the street at 8:00pm!
- 8:00-8:10pm Regular riders get a head start
- 8:20-8:25pm Fast riders chase ‘em down?!?
- START: EASTRIDGE MALL - Eastridge Loop – West corner toward Tully & Quimby
- END: 101 Paseo de San Antonio @ SJ REP, downtown San Jose
Maps
Mellow Steer Ride: MapMyRide (the flatter version), “Visual Map” (all of ride) , the “Turn by Turn” directions (double sided format)
- or -
Challenging Bull Ride: MapMyRide (the hilly version), “Visual Map” (only miles 3-10.5, see other map too), the “Turn by Turn” directions (double sided format)
Note: The Mellow ride at 220ft elevation overall is slightly more than average…but the 486 ft for the “Challenging” ride is great… but only if you know how to ride! Be sure to let faster riders pass on the left *inside the rightmost lane* and let slower riders merge right.
For Pre-Rides please look at “more” down below.
Note that the VTA Alum Rock station is only about 2.75 miles away and the Curtner station is about 4miles away. (DT SJ is 5.65 mi away – you can park there and join a Pre-Ride)
As always we need Volunteers at key intersections and to ensure riders go deep in to the regroups!
Proposed Pre-Rides
Bike Partiers live all over town, and many people like to ride together to the ride – especially since any experienced Bike Partier knows parking and transit near our ride starts are usually no fun. These “pre-rides” are a nice way to meet with others on the way to the ride.
Pre-Ride leaders are needed for these!
Click on the starting location links below for suggested routes.

This ride is going to be soooo sweet! I might do the West side pre-ride from Campbell…if I do, we’ll aim to leave right at 6:30 and not waste too much time covering those 10mi.

Ian has been running Pre-Rides from North SJ for the last few months… these pre-rides are a great way to meet smaller groups of people and you don’t miss out on a thing!!
Don’t see a leader yet, sign up! Let’s get these all filled up.
Also remember that the Alum Rock VTA line is only about 2.5-3 miles from Eastridge!

Here are visual maps for this month’s ride. the “Hilly Route” only shows the hilly extention of the ride, and those riders will need both maps to have the full route.

I’ll be riding to the start through downtown, and can join the pre-ride from there leaving at 7:15. Wouldn’t want to leave much later.

sounds good cerina… mostly cloudy is the best forecast we could hope for… it keeps the heat closer to the ground and will be 5-8 degrees warmer than if we had clear skies.

January 14, 2010
@rapid robert – ideally more than half will leave downtown no later than 6:45 so they can experience all the bike party before the start.
whoever can lead the pre-rides, please let us know and we’ll put 2 leaders names up on the list.
we’d love to have volunteers get together at about 7:45pm to discuss our needs.
we need people to “push” and “pull” at the start and regroups and to coordinate (if possible) the timing of the two legs of the middle of the route so that the “mellow steer ride” can get there to Yerba Buena & Silver Creek a bit BEFORE the “bull riders”
thanks again for all the volunteers who helped out next month. lets get even more and make this ride the best one yet…

I’ll be a bit rushed that evening, so I’m planning on getting to downtown right around 7:10pm-7:15pm and leaving shortly thereafter. We should be able to make it to Eastridge on-time as long as we don’t dilly-dally too much. @RapidRobert, hope to see you there.
Rapid Robert
January 14, 2010
I don’t think I can make it from work and be there for a 6:45 departure from downtown. I’ll go past the downtown pre-ride start location, and if anyone’s there I’ll stop. But I’ll want to leave from there by 7:15 at the latest

I’ll be at the Oakridge Oaks parking area at 6:20 for the Pre-ride and look forward to seeing those of us cylists from the South Cambrian, Robertsville and Almaden neighborhoods. Look for the well lit Townie guy.

January 14, 2010
@Townie Bill — if it makes sense to be at the main entrance on the Blossom Hill side versus the oak tree, that’s cool too.
that’d be either the Century sign/Starbucks or the Buca di Beppo’s/BJ’s I’d guess…..?
whichever you choose, have a great ride!

for those wanting a round trip from downtown, please look at the orange places on this interactive map. cheapest, about $3 and you can join one of two pre-rides out of downtown San Jose!
http://www.sjdowntownparking.com/parking_map.html
for those wanting a round trip back to Eastridge, can just take a right turn at Tully. ut if you’re a BIRD you’ll miss out on some stuff at the end. (hint, hint)

For all Willow Glen, Cambrian, Robertsville, or Almaden Bike Partiers, I will be looking to hook up with you all at the Oakridge Mall on the Blossom Hill Road side in the parking lot where the Oak trees are. There are 2 big oaks but only one of them is in a parking area. You will find me on the glowing Townie at 6:20 and I hope to see your smiling faces and bikes all lit up!

I was just looking at the turn by turn directions, and found two contradictions.
1. The TxT and map both show going left at Quimby instead of Simbertan as on the Visual map. It’s QUIMBY OFF REMINGTON.
2. The TxT says to go right at Laddy off King. That’s wrong. Both maps show we’re going LEFT AT ABORN OFF KING, which is the only thing possible.
Probably not a big issue, but i noticed it and thought I’d give a heads-up.
Rapid Robert
January 14, 2010
The TxT also has the Hilly Route going left at Norwood and right at Ruby instead of staying with the Mellow Route to Quimby. Don’t know the official position on that one. Maybe a great couple of intersections for signage.

Turn by turn directions had a few errors. Those have been updated. Thanks Rapid Robert for pointing them out!
See you guys tomorrow!

January 14, 2010
@rapidrobert, johnm – thanks for your quick action on this…
it’d be cool if we could have the “mellow” riders start from eastridge first, then have the “bull” riders follow… hard to make it happen, but it’d be cool if the fixed riders, etc are up for it.
lets keep the “mellow” regroups short so we can stay on time and meet the “bull” riders on YB
testrides
January 14, 2010
@bryan – start the ride 10 miles in? lol that’s one way to do it. very hard to estimate when that would be… might get to the 1st regroup at 8:30-8:45 or so…. and that 2nd regroup at King & Tully 9:20-9:30 (or much later?!?)
we’re going to try to keep the “mellow” regroups shorter (the “steeper” regroups can be longer!) and make regroup #3 the longest.

Support SJBP
My bike club and I will have fund-raising Recycle Bins and a volunteer sign-up sheet as discussed at the last meeting. Hopefully we could have some cold water and fruits too.
Please help spread the awareness about it. the more we can throw in, the more we can get back.
Bring some from home; we’ll be at the start.
then hold on to your recyclables and trash;
we’ll meet you at the RG’s.
We’ll be on the mellow route.
Ride On!!!

On another note…
These Routes are going to be sweet. I’m Excited for SJBP. You guys did a nice job developing the ride. My bc will be cruising on the mellow route.
for the BULLs… Enjoy the View up on them Hills! I’m a bit envious of the thrill ride going down. Can Someone Pleeeease, Take Pictures of the Valley and send them to me … I love that view.
@RapidRObert nice effort on the visual map. lookn good.

January 15, 2010
@rapid robert, johnm — the map was updated (wed/thurs?) … there is no simberton anymore… we’re taking Remington all the way to Quimby so that we can split into the “mellow” and “steep” at Evergreen Valley HS (at Quimby and Ruby).
So someone with a bullhorn at the Evergreen Valley High School won’t be as annoying as at Simberton and Ruby.
As long as people get the gist of it, many follow others and don’t look at the map or read em so we’ll see what happens.
testrides
January 15, 2010
we’ll probably determine how short we should make the two regroups on the mellow ride or if we should make the 2nd one optional and skip it… to keep pace with the bull riders on the steeper course.
the first regroup is 7miles in (3 1/2 of those are mostly downhill) and the next one is only at 10 miles… so we might see if we can last till the 3rd regroup at 15.2 miles.
FYI – there are some slight uphills around miles 10.5-12, then mostly flat or downhill from there.

That was a okay ride i liked it but the guy with the motor scooter has to go thats cheating man even though you think its a bike cause of the pedals it still has a motor i saw at least 3 people with them and they were all big people riding them if you cant ride a bike and have to cheat with a scooter go home you cheap-o’s and get a bike. I hated that guy with the green one with the leather jacket cause i was riding next to him the whole time he was going as fast as i was and riding next to me with that noisy engine was annoying and heard at least 6 groups of people saying it was cheating and it was. So next time leave your scooters at home this is bike party no engines aloud. [editor's joke: apparently the fumes got to this poster's head...all the punctuation fell out!]

Agreed. Spirits were as high as ever this month, the regroups went well, and people were very respectful of red light (major turnaround compared to most of last year). Whoooo!!!

took a friend for his first time at BP. he loved it and cant wait for the next one.
the meetups seemed better then last one i went to, didnt seem that people waited in the cold, not riding, as long as the other.
one confusing part was the hill section. heard a guy say something on a PA, but only heard “all the way to the top.” once we got to the top we had no idea where to go. so we took some back neighborhood roads and finally ran into the “easy route” again.
noticed less people paying attention to red lights than usual, which isnt a good thing. but overall a very successful bike party

Meh im not writing a essay so i don’t bother putting punctuation in thanx guy or lady for pointing that out to me haha.
Winter rides are the best, less crowded and less confusion with all those people plus we have less police ruining our fun because the more people the more rowdyer we get and more trouble we have.

Bike party’s all about cooperation and consideration. Little things, like letting cars pass or turn and using punctuation when commenting here, show respect for those seeing or reading. I don’t mean to suggest being the “proper gentleman” writing the Queen’s English, but making a little effort makes a difference. Otherwise, it’s just a big finger to the audience … us. End of Rant.
Bike party certainly was a good time this month. Great tunes, the mellow routs felt like it was mostly downhill to me, the weather was excellent, and the organized exit from the last regrouping spot really helped keep the group together. Thanks Scott!

Shouldn’t have even left a comment if people are going to make a fuss over small little periods or commas really come on now. Just trying to point out something that made others not to happy not to get made fun of for how I didn’t put punctuation in my comment geez guys.
